What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence where the focus is to create machines that can simulate human intelligence. Arthur Samuel, a machine learning pioneer back in 1959, defined machine learning as a " field of study that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed" [1].

In practical terms, machine learning algorithms are applied to different types of data for pattern discovery. The discovery results, often in the form of machine learning models, can be used to predict new outcomes (e.g. customer churn, sales) or to identify hidden patterns (e.g. customer segmentation) that are difficult for humans to detect.

Over the last several years, machine learning has become an integral part of many organizations’ decision-making processes. H2O.ai offers Driverless AI, which automates several time-consuming aspects of a typical data science workflow, including data visualization, feature engineering, predictive modeling, and model explanation.
