Jewelers Mutual uses H2O Driverless AI to give underwriters transparent, reason-coded decisions and price jewelry protection more competitively.
Jewelers Mutual, the leading insurer dedicated to jewelry, needed advanced analytics that its regulated business could stand behind. After using Gradient Boosting Machine and DataRobot's AutoML, the team wanted far greater model transparency and explainability to support underwriting decisions.
As a regulated insurance business, the company sought a solution that offered superior interpretability so underwriters and regulators could understand and trust the reasoning behind each model decision.
After evaluating multiple platforms, Jewelers Mutual implemented H2O Driverless AI and H2O-3. Its first deployed model assisted commercial underwriters using machine learning interpretability features, delivering reason codes for underwriting decisions through a web application.
The team used Driverless AI's automatic deployment capability (MOJOs) to accelerate model deployment across hybrid cloud infrastructure spanning on-premises, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure.
With explainable models in production, Jewelers Mutual offered more competitive jewelry protection rates and improved its overall business relationships with jeweler partners. The company also deployed AI insights to identify jewelry stores needing additional physical security during California wildfires and power outages.
The team planned to expand into additional use cases, including lifetime customer value, loss prevention, customer 360 profiling, and customer journey optimization.
“We chose H2O AI because it gave us the transparency we needed into our machine learning process, much more flexibility than the other tools we evaluated, and the strongest machine learning explainability capabilities on the market.”Andrew LangsnerSenior Manager, Embedded Analytics at Jewelers Mutual
